Dear Friends,

This last pandemic year and a half was a tremendous struggle for musicians and artists, and I am very proud that Museum Concerts was successful in presenting six concerts – live performances – with the necessary accommodations to keep the artists and audiences safe. In times of hardship and worry, music is a much-needed balm for the soul. We are all the more grateful to resume our full concert season for 2021-22, and we hope you will both subscribe and give as generously as you are able to help us bring the best of early music to Rhode Island.

Our coming season is particularly far-reaching: from the wonders of 11th-century chant by the German mystic Hildegard von Bingen, through the vigor of Beethoven’s works for pianoforte and cello. In between we offer two Renaissance programs – an intimate program of music from the time of Charles II, and a majestic, noisy program of German Brass music for Christmas! Our own Providence Baroque Orchestra explores the works of Bach and Telemann to open our season, with a guest leader, Daniel Lee, who is on the music faculty at Yale. An exquisite chamber sonata by Elizabeth Jacquet de La Guerre highlights the elegance of the French Court style, so admired by Bach and Telemann.

We have chosen this year to have a movable feast, with three of the programs taking place at our usual venue – the historic First Unitarian Church – and two other programs taking place in other suitable locations. The October Beethoven program will take place in the Great Hall at St. Martin's, to allow the intimacy of a salon performance, and the May concert will pair soaring Medieval chants with the generous acoustics of St. Joseph Church at Hope and Arnold Streets. We look forward to seeing you at the concerts! And please do subscribe, and get a free pair of passes to introduce others to our wonderful programs – the best place to be on Sunday afternoons in Providence!
